Food scraps and fresh plant matter that provide nutrients for microorganisms.

Carbon (Browns)
Dry leaves and woody material that provide energy for decomposers.

Decomposers
The heroes! Worms, fungi, and bacteria that break down organic matter.

Water (Moisture)
Essential for life in the pile. Too dry? Nothing happens. Too wet? It stinks!

Air (Oxygen)
Required for aerobic decomposition. Keep that pile turning!
